Asia recycled LDPE: Stable amid thin trade / Separation of flexibles has processing limitations / Brand owners lowering prior pledges

The Asian recycled low-density polyethylene market was stable in the week to Aug. 20 on thin trade. Sources said separating flexibles, such as LDPE films, was more challenging than separating rigid HDPE and PET plastics, such as detergent bottles and water containers. This constrained the supply of raw materials for recycling. Recycled market demand remained inconsistent due to processing limitations, with most recycled flexibles ending up as garbage bags, which have a low final product price. Recycling rates were reportedly low, below 50%, according to the recycler. Mechanical recycled polyethylene demand continued to experience weakness, also due to low virgin PE prices applying the greatest pressure. Brand owners and producers lowered prior recycling pledges.
