Asian PET: Prices edge higher on stronger feedstocks, demand stays weak / PET producers remain in the red as spreads stay below breakeven / Polyester sector shows early signs of recovery ahead of peak season

Asian polyethylene terephthalate prices inched higher in the week ended Aug. 27, buoyed by stronger crude and upstream markets. Asian PET up $5/mt week over week at $770/ mt FOB Northeast Asia Aug. 27, and FOB Southeast Asia was assessed at $845/mt, up $5/mt over the same period. Spot bottle-grade PET prices in Asia found some support from stronger upstream paraxylene (PX) and purified terephthalic acid (PTA) costs. However, export demand remained under pressure, with buyers showing little appetite to restock amid a seasonal lull and current elevated price levels, industry sources said. "Buyers are still holding out for lower prices, as they are not in a hurry to purchase, and the demand outlook for September doesn't look promising," a Southeast Asian producer noted.
