Asian Polyethylene: Discussions few on sluggish demand / China domestic markets see price support on turnarounds / Downstream weakness caps overall demand

The Asian polyethylene markets continued to struggle with sluggish demand in the week to Aug. 13. Discussions were few, with some participants noting a lack of activity amid the typical lull season. In China, offers for imported Middle-East origin material were lower in the week, but deals remained few as buying appetite was thin. However, LDPE discussion levels rose in the Chinese domestic markets amid an ongoing turnaround in the region. Meanwhile, discussions in the domestic HDPE markets remained tepid but gained some support from an upcoming turnaround at a major producer. In Southeast Asia, discussions were thin as well, with sources citing poor finished goods demand and limited support from the upstream ethylene markets. The price of ethylene was stable at $830/mt CFR SE Asia since July 7.
