Asian recycled high-density polyethylene natural film pellets down $10/mt day over day at $740/mt FOB Southeast Asia on Sept. 3, on a tradable discussion. Market participants were anticipating stability or further declines in September, given virgin polyethylene was trading at low prices at around the mid $800s/mt with the recycled-virgin spread at only around $100/mt, much lower than the conversion cost, recyclers said. Consumers are pushed to weigh economics against sustainability, with fossil fuel-based virgin material remaining ever more competitive compared to its recycled counterpart. The pricing spread between Asian recycled high-density polyethylene natural pellets and virgin HDPE remained at a negative $115/mt, with weaker market fundamentals seen for the latter.
