Asian PTA: Prices weaken on macro headwinds, soft demand / Downstream polyester demand offers little support / Sanfangxiang shuts older PTA lines, runs newer unit near full rates

Asian purified terephthalic acid prices softened in the week to Aug. 29, pressured by weak macroeconomic sentiment and limited support from the downstream polyester sector. PTA FOB China at $634/mt on Aug. 29, unchanged from the previous day. The weekly average stood at $637.80/mt, up $8.20/mt week over week. Spot prices edged higher earlier in the week on talks over potential disruption at a Chinese paraxylene producer. But the rally quickly reversed after the company did not confirm such developments. Some market participants described the pullback as a healthy correction, with additional pressure coming from softer crude oil sentiment.
