Asian PET: Prices fall further amid weak demand / Fundamentals little changed / Winter demand supports polyester

Asian polyethylene terephthalate prices fell further in the week ended Aug. 20, pressured by weak demand and struggling margins. PET FOB Northeast Asia down $5/mt week over week at $765/mt on Aug. 20, while PET FOB Southeast Asia was assessed down $5 at $840/mt over the same period. Demand cues remained stable to bearish, with no near-term improvement expected, market sources said. A trader in China also cited "bad margins" as a factor hurting producer profitability. Offers for China-loading cargoes in September were heard as low as $770/mt. Meanwhile, the polyester market appeared stronger compared with PET.
