India Methanol: Rises on higher spot activity for non-Iranian cargoes / Traders cautious to buy Iranian supplies / Gap widens with CFR China value

Methanol prices in India continued to climb for the fourth consecutive week Aug. 22, as buying activity rose, with importers actively covering September spot cargoes from non-sanctioned suppliers to fill in the supply gap for Iranian supplies. Several spot trades were heard, with at least 30,000 mt heard traded in the week ended Aug. 22. Trade discussions spiked over the week, led by resistance among importers to buy Iranian supply. “No one wants to take any risk,” an importer said. Indian methanol importers remained cautious to buy Iranianorigin cargoes after the fresh round of US sanctions effective July 31 hit some Indian chemical trading firms. “Started to hear $305/mt on Monday [Aug. 18] until yesterday [Aug. 21] was $327/mt,” a Middle East seller said Aug. 22.
