Asian polyethylene terephthalate prices strengthened in the week ended Jan. 28, supported by firmer upstream feedstock prices and a rally in China’s futures market. Asian PET at $825/metric ton FOB Northeast Asia on Jan. 28, up $25/mt week over week, while PET FOB Southeast Asia was at $860/mt, an increase of $20/mt over the same period. Bottle-grade PET spot prices across Asia found cost support following a sharp rise in upstream purified terephthalic acid and monoethylene glycol prices during the week. Further upstream, Asian paraxylene spot prices climbed to their highest level in nearly 17 months, reaching $929.67/mt on Jan. 26, largely driven by a surge in Chinese futures.
