Asian PVC: Prices surge on cost pressures / Buyers delay purchases amid volatility / China operating rates decline, tightening supply

Asian polyvinyl chloride prices strengthened in the week to Sept. 2, driven by escalating upstream costs. In the export market, ethylene-based PVC FOB China at $730/metric ton on Sep. 2, up $30/mt week over week, while carbide-based PVC FOB China climbed $55/mt to $720/mt. Despite the price rally, market activity remained subdued as most buyers adopted a cautious stance, participants said. “Prices have increased too rapidly. After hitting a low last week, they’ve rebounded sharply in recent days, prompting customers to hold off on purchases,” a Chinese trader said, adding, “Volatile freight rates are also adding uncertainty, and overseas demand appears soft, so most buyers are waiting on the sidelines.” PVC CFR China prices at $840/mt on Sept. 2, up $20/mt from the previous week, while CFR Southeast Asia prices...
